Tips For Kid Photography

I’ve been interested in photography for about 2 years now.  I’ve taken SOOO many pictures of my kids.  I’ve taken pictures of them in just about every given situation.  I don’t think I’m the best photographer.  But I do feel like I have learned a few things and maybe I can share some things that will help you.

I’ll share 7 tips each one getting a dedicated post.

Tip #1

Put the phone down and pick up your camera!

As I’ve talked with most people almost all of them say that they have a “good” camera but that they don’t carry it with them.  So true that the phones take pretty good pictures.  They are small and convenient.  But if you want to go from a pretty good photo so a great photo, put the phone down and pick up that good camera.  Let me show you what I mean.

The first picture is one that I took one evening of the three kids saying thank you to a friend for a gift she had given to them.  I had my phone and it was convenient to just snap a picture.  No big deal.  But let us look at another photo taken in the house.  Notice both how sharp the photo is and how details and available with the photo.

Notice how clear Hayden is.  How rich the colors are and how the picture reflects what your natural eyes can see.

This was a day Kennedy was going to have her rhyming parade at school.  If you aren’t going to carry your “good” camera around with you all the time.  Don’t miss a chance to bust it out on days when something important is happening.  I took this with my phone because Kennedy was so excited about her outfit.  I didn’t have my camera with me.  Shame on me.  But I did get my camera later and got a much better shot.

This is the one I took with my camera.  She was walking back to class and I snapped it quickly.  Kennedy may have a cuter smile in the previous photo.  But look how clear, how bright and how sharp the image is.  Your much more likely to put an image that is clear, sharp and full of color on the wall then an image that is blurry, grainy and dull.  Phones, as good as they aren’t, can’t compete with that “good” camera you have hidden away.

The last photo that I want to share is a photo I took of McKay playing in the house.  With that “good” camera you can do some fun things that your phone camera can’t do.  You can change how bright and dark the photo appears (don’t worry, it isn’t that hard!).  But you will be able to get some amazing photo just by playing with your camera.  Have fun with it!

All of these photos were taken inside, which is probably the hardest place to take a good photo.  But get the “good” camera out of the closet and just start shooting.  Have fun with it and enjoy those kids!
